Flyball Box Thrusters

These flyball box thrusters are installed into all my prebuilt flyball boxes and can also be purchased separately for you to install them in to your own box shell.
This style of ball throwing mechanism supersedes the traditional older style of wood swing arm / catapult boxes that were prone to be inconsistent and loud.

The thrusters are precisely machined to exact standards. They are completely made out of metal (except for the rubber bump stop) The outer frame of the thruster is made out of aluminum. The thrust shaft and catch are made from hardened steel.

The thrust shaft is round and is able to rotate 360 degrees. This allows the thrusters metal catch barrel to float creating an even wear all around.

The metal latch is placed on a long fulcrum arm to increase box sensitivity and latching reliability. When installed correctly only -/+ 1/4" of pedal travel is required to trigger the box.

Features

  • All aluminum 6061 exoskeleton,
  • Steel thrust shaft,
  • Stainless steel assembly bolts and nuts,
  • Compression spring for thrusting the ball,
  • Steel thrust shaft bushings,
  • Adjustable spring rate,
  • Adjustable stroke length,
  • Quiet operation.

Consistency

Even though there are many variables that can determine a balls trajectory, ( ie, ball size, ball weight, slobber, dirt, ball seams, how It's loaded, old or new ball ) This style of Ball Thruster will help make the balls trajectory more consistent compared to the traditional catapult/swing arm method. The Thruster hits the ball straight on with no deflection that can/may occur with a traditional catapult/swing arm mechanism.

Advantages

These Thrusters have advantages over your traditional catapult/swing arm method.

  • Consistent shot,
  • Reacts faster,
  • Very sensitive (hair trigger)
  • Robust,
  • Life Span,
  • Quiet,
  • Minimal maintenance.
  • No "dead spot" on the pedal,
  • Minimal recoil/concussion when fired; this is easier on the box structure,
  • Simplified box design making the box lighter when compared to the traditional box mechanism,
  • They are not effected by weather (temperature, moisture/humidity)

Development

Ever since I starting building boxes I always toyed with the idea of incorporating the use of a compression spring rather than extension springs.

Many prototypes were made with plenty of headaches and countless re-designs. I also consulted with fellow flyball enthusiasts which inspired me to develop a reliable, high quality yet affordable ball launching mechanism.

I made several different styles of mechanisms trying different applications to see what would work best.
I also had a bit of resistance from the flyball community because the train of thought many years ago was that a far ball throwing distance was essential for a fast turn.

My research has shown that a quick reaction time, a short pedal travel plus a sensitive pedal are the key elements to an ideal box and box turn.

Installation

The thrusters can be retro-fitted into most flyball boxes (internal clearance and box condition being the limiting factor). They can be bolted or screwed into place with a few minor modifications to your existing box.
A "handy-person" with basic tools should be able to install them into a box, however, flyball box knowledge is preferred.

Older boxes may have a warped or skewed structure making installation counterproductive. If this is the case, a new box may be in order.

I do not have specific mounting instruction for these thrusters. Due to the fact that there are so many different styles of flyball boxes it would be very difficult for me to provide such documentation or support..

Maintenance

Like any highly tuned mechanical device the thrusters must be cleaned and lubed occasionally. I recommend a Teflon based lube rather than a Petroleum based lube. It's okay to lube/spray all sliding and rotating pieces.

These thrusters have a 1 year warranty of parts and labor to make any necessary repairs and/or adjustments caused from defect or abnormal wear. They can be easily removed from the box in matter of minutes and sent. (Shipping not included)

Abuse, neglect, improper installation and/or modification voids warranty.

Ordering

These thrusters are in high demand. I machine and assemble all Thrusters personally.

Thrusters are usually built in production runs. There is a small lead time required to produce them if wanted separately.

** Please note: Thrusters may be slightly different than shown due to the availability of material and miscellaneous hardware.

Pricing

Each aluminum thruster costs $125.00Can each.

** Please note: shipping is not included.
